(Alexandria, Virginia) The Global Liberty Alliance (GLA) acknowledges and supports the October 3rd letter from the Chairs of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) to President Biden, calling for intensified efforts to secure the release of unjustly detained Americans, including GLA client Mark Swidan. The letter, embedded at the end of this post emphasized the need for high-level diplomatic advocacy, citing Swidan's ongoing suffering and wrongful imprisonment in the People's Republic of China (PRC). The Congressional letter highlighted the alarming number of Americans enduring prolonged detention in China under harsh conditions, with serious due process violations and severe mistreatment. Mark Swidan's case has been identified as meeting the criteria under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act. The CECC leaders urged President Biden to make these cases a diplomatic priority and to continue efforts to ensure the safe return of these Americans. A devout Catholic from the small town of Luling, Texas, Mark has been wrongfully imprisoned in Communist China for twelve years. The GLA began advocating for Mark two years ago, during which time progress has been made on his case. In the past two years, there have been two Congressional resolutions recognizing Mark's wrongful detention. Prior to GLA's involvement, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued a finding of wrongful detention and urged the Chinese government to release Mark. GLA is now working with the UN WGAD in Geneva to update Mark's record and press for his release. GLA remains committed to advocating for Mark Swidan’s release and appreciates the CECC’s continued support in bringing attention to this critical issue.
