WASHINGTON, D.C., May 31, 2024 — The Global Liberty Alliance (GLA) is urgently appealing for an end to the unjust imprisonment, harassment, and mistreatment of two Cuban sisters under the Communist regime. On May 28, 2024, Lisdany Rodriguez Isaac was granted temporary release from detention due to her high-risk pregnancy. Tragically, her sister, Lisdiany, remains incarcerated. Lisdany's situation is dire; coerced into an attempted abortion, she suffers from inadequate medical care and is battling complications including placenta previa, a condition that poses grave risks to both her and her unborn child. Despite Cuba's claims of a robust healthcare system, Lisdany's experience underscores the regime's callous disregard for human life. Moreover, reports suggest a systemic pattern of abuse, including forced abortions and separation of children from incarcerated mothers. The Isaac sisters, members of the Free Yoruba religious minority, have endured persecution for their beliefs. Their faith, which combines elements of Judaism and African spirituality, faces heightened hostility under Cuba's authoritarian rule. Their ordeal began with their arrest during protests on July 11, 2022, triggered by shortages of essential goods brought on by the COVID-19 crisis, even in late 2022. These demonstrations marked a significant challenge to the government since the 1994 Maleconazo uprising. GLA has uncovered evidence of egregious violations against the sisters. Lisdany was pressured into an abortion and denied medical attention, while Lisdiany remains imprisoned for her dissent. The plight of the Rodriguez Isaac sisters is not unique. GLA also advocates for Loreto Hernandez Garcia and Donaida Perez Paseiro, fellow Free Yoruba practitioners detained for their involvement in the July 11 protests. GLA unequivocally condemns these human rights abuses, emphasizing the Cuban government's blatant disregard for both national and international laws. We call for an immediate cessation of persecution against these individuals and demand their unconditional release, along with all prisoners of conscience in Cuba. As an organization committed to defending individual freedoms and the rule of law worldwide, GLA relies on the support of compassionate individuals like you to continue our vital work.
