(Alexandria, Virginia) The Global Liberty Alliance (GLA) today reaffirmed its commitment to helping secure the immediate release of Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak, who turns 61 after more than 24 years held incommunicado in Eritrea. Building on today’s joint statement with the Edelstam Foundation and the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, GLA urges urgent, coordinated action for proof of life, consular access, and the unconditional release of Mr. Isaak and his detained journalist colleagues. “We will not stop until Dawit is safely reunited with his family. The Trump Administration and Congress can and should do more to ensure Eritrea's President, Isaias Afwerki, who claims to be an ally of America, does the right thing,” said Jason I. Poblete, President of the Global Liberty Alliance. In recent years, the U.S. Senate has repeatedly reaffirmed press freedom and condemned the jailing of journalists. Bipartisan World Press Freedom Day resolutions (2022–2024) underscore America’s solidarity with those who speak truth to power—efforts backed and co-sponsored by leaders including then-Senator (now Secretary of State) Marco Rubio, who has consistently spotlighted the plight of imprisoned journalists and dissidents, including Mr. Isaak. These actions reflect a clear U.S. consensus: silencing the press is an attack on fundamental individual rights. Today's press release is embedded in this post. GLA also issued a notice on September 22, 2025. Your browser does not support viewing this document. Click here to download the document. Comments are closed.
