Jimmy Sharmahd’s Final Journey: The Fight for Justice Continues

This past week in Berlin, a memorial was held for Jamshid (“Jimmy”) Sharmahd, a U.S. Legal Resident and German citizen who was unjustly imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately killed by the Islamic Regime of Iran. His daughter Gazelle and son Shayan (pictured), alongside family and allies from around the world, gathered not only to mourn his loss—but to renew the call for justice.

For years, the Global Liberty Alliance (GLA) has worked alongside the Sharmahd family to defend Jimmy’s rights and secure his release. His execution at the hands of the Islamic Regime must not mark the end of this fight. Rather, it is a call to action—to pursue justice, accountability, and real consequences for those responsible.
The Berlin event brought together members of civil society and key political figures, including Acting Federal Minister Cem Özdemir, Berlin Mayor and Economic Affairs Senator Franziska Giffey, and Bundestag Member Clara Bünger.

Now Jimmy starts his journey back home to California.

The Berlin event was organized by the human rights group HÁWAR.help and, during the gathering, the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR)—which is providing legal support in Germany to the Sharmahd family—shared findings from the autopsy: critical organs had been removed, making it impossible to assess whether Jamshid suffered violence before his death. The exact cause of death remains unclear.

The Global Liberty Alliance and legal teams are now launching an Accountability Campaign in the United States and Europe. This legal and policy effort will focus on bringing to light the complicity of those who enabled or ignored Jimmy’s ordeal and advocating for but not limited to targeted sanctions, criminal investigations, and reparative actions in various fora.

This work is complex, costly, and urgent.

Why accountability matters:  When governments kidnap, torture or execute political prisoners without consequence, they undermine the rule of law everywhere.  What was done to Jimmy impacts every American.  

If we do not respond, we signal impunity to other regimes who imprison and kill with disregard for international norms. Accountability not only honors Jamshid’s memory—it protects others at risk.
