U.S. Secures Release of American Mark Swidan from China After 12 Years of Unjust Detention11/27/2024
(Alexandria, Virginia) The Global Liberty Alliance (GLA) welcomes the long-overdue release of American citizen Mark Swidan, who was wrongfully detained in China for over a decade. Swidan’s freedom was secured through tireless advocacy efforts and diplomatic negotiations. Among those recognized for their dedication to his case is GLA President Jason Poblete, who worked diligently alongside U.S. officials and advocates to ensure Swidan’s return. The Hill newspaper reported that actor Mel Gibson publicly applauded the efforts of Poblete, members of the Texas Congressional delegation—including Senator Ted Cruz—and journalists such as Elizabeth Vargas and Alison Weiner for their commitment to Swidan’s cause.
Swidan was released as part of a prisoner swap agreement with Beijing, alongside fellow Americans Kai Li and John Leung. This development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Americans unjustly detained abroad and the importance of persistent legal and diplomatic efforts to bring them home. GLA remains committed to supporting efforts that defend fundamental rights and the rule of law worldwide. Comments are closed.
