José Daniel Ferrer is a prominent Cuban dissident, founder of the umbrella organization The Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unidad Patriótica de Cuba, or “UNPACU”), who has often suffered brutal treatment by the Communist regime. He was detained along with three other UNPACU members in Santiago de Cuba on October 1, 2019 on trumped-up charges of assault and kidnapping. While in prison for six months (until April 3), he suffered torture and neglect in solitary confinement, and was never allowed more than 5 minutes’ visit with family.
Ferrer and his colleagues were brought to trial in Santiago de Cuba on charges of assault and kidnapping on February 26, 2020, and after all their petitions for writ of habeas corpus and appeals were denied. GLA tasked counsel to work with Ferrer and other advisors in Cuba, and the GLA legal team prepared the four dissidents’ habeas corpus petitions in fall 2019. GLA also applied for precautionary measures with the Organization of American States's Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, which were granted to three of the four men on February 13, 2020.
At the conclusion of the trial, the prosecutors confirmed they would seek a sentence of 9 years’ prison in early March. The sentence was indefinitely delayed, and on April 3, 2020, Ferrer and his fellow prisoners were released from prison-- into four years of house arrest.
GLA will continue to fight for justice for these four innocent men.
