Yesterday, the Court of Justice of the European Union legally annulled agreements on agricultural trade and fishing partnerships between the European Union and the Kingdom of Morocco. The Court determined that the European Union and Morocco did not secure the legally required consent from Western Sahara, a third party to the agreement, a necessary element of customary international law.
On July 14, 2021, the Global Liberty Alliance joined over 50 individuals and organizations from the United States and the international community in urging Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez (D-NY), and Chairman of the Armed Services Committee Jack Reed (D-RI), to block the sale of military-grade weapons systems to Morocco.
GLA has published its first Law Note, "The Abraham Accords and Western Sahara: The Legal Status of the Deal," prepared by GLA legal intern Dara Finley, third-year law student at Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. In it, Ms. Finley asserts that the United States' acceptance of Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara runs contrary to both historical U.S. policy and international law.
