On August 7, Florida school teacher and US citizen Alina López Miyares celebrated her fifth consecutive birthday as a prisoner in Cuba. A few days later, her 94-year-old mother, also named Alina, recorded a message for U.S. policymakers and representatives pleading for support in securing her daughter’s release.
Ms. Alina López has been detained by Cuban authorities since 2017. Denied consular services and adequate medical attention, for several years she depended on her now 94-year-old mother to fly to Cuba from her home in Miami Beach to deliver much-needed medication and other basic commodities.
With pandemic-related travel restrictions, and her advanced age, Alina’s mother is no longer able to make the journey, leaving her daughter without any means of receiving necessary supplies. In the message her mother recorded for GLA on August 10, Alina’s mother explains that her family has suffered indescribable punishment, and her only objective is to see her daughter returned safely home. She goes on pleading for President Biden’s support, as well as help from former President Obama, who has daughters of his own, and knows what it is to suffer for one’s child. The complete transcription and translation of Mrs. López’s message can be read below.
The Global Liberty Alliance will continue to fight to secure the release of Ms. Alina Lopez, and others unlawfully detained abroad. For more information, please see Alina’s Case Profile HERE.
