GLA in the News: NBC- Family of Cuban-American Jailed in Cuba Says Her Health is Deteriorating3/25/2021
THE PAIN THAT A MOTHER FEELS DOES NOT COMPARE WITH ANYTHING”- MOTHER OF ALINA LOPEZ MIYARES, U.S. CITIZEN UNLAWFULLY DETAINED IN CUBA. Global Liberty Alliance (GLA) client, Ms. Alina Lopez Miyares, has been unlawfully detained in Cuba for four years. NBC News’ Carmen Sesin spoke with Alina’s 93-year-old mother about the case. Ms. Lopez Miyares’s mother still holds that her daughter is innocent, and fears she may pass before she gets to see her daughter again. Over the duration of her imprisonment, she has relied on her mother for food and basic commodities, which she brought with her on monthly trips to Cuba. Unfortunately her mother has been unable to travel over the past year.
The Cuban government has denied Ms. Lopez Miyares consular services, and she is in desperate need of medicine for her declining health. Consular visits would allow American diplomats to deliver medicine to her. Ms. Lopez Miyares’s lawyer in the United States, Jason Poblete, has been working with the new Biden Administration and noted both the National Security Council and State Department are concerned for López’s well-being as they look for ways to assist. “Cuba should take notice that the release of Americans unlawfully detained, such as Alina, is a priority of the Biden administration,” Poblete said. Last month, Poblete recorded a message from Ms. Lopez Miyares during a call from prison where she reiterated she is innocent, and needs help. Her message for Biden: “I am very proud of you and the vice president, and I really, really want to go home. That’s all I want to do. And congratulations once again.” The full article published by NBC News can be read HERE.
