Earlier today, on June 16, human rights activist and member of the Eastern Democratic Alliance (ADO) Eldris González Pozo voluntarily surrendered to authorities in Santiago de Cuba. Mr. Gonzales Pozo was summoned to appear at the Aguadores prison on June 15, prior to receiving a response on the appeal filed on his case.
Mr. González Pozo was summoned by Cuban National Police in May after posting anti-government propaganda around town. He was sentenced to 3 years for contempt and disobedience. An appeal was filed on his behalf later in the month, though Mr. González Pozo was not notified of the denial until after he was summoned by a court bailiff to serve his prison sentence.
In the video taken earlier today, Mr. González Pozo makes clear that he is voluntarily turning himself in for an unjust prison sentence. We will share more details as the case unfolds.
