Nicaragua, though Socialist since its 1978 Marxist revolution, is a predominantly Catholic country. There is an ongoing campaign against Christians and freedom of worship. The Ortega regime just sentenced a dozen Protestant leaders to 10-15 years in prison and ordered them to pay collective fines over 880 million dollars. They were convicted of money laundering after holding evangelical events across the South American nation. As part of an ongoing project to raise awareness of challenges to religious liberty, particularly Latin America, Global Liberty Alliance President and Counsel Jason Poblete was interviewed by EWTN's Tracy Sabol. Here in the US, Senators Rick Scott (FL), Ted Cruz (TX), Katie Brett (AL) and Tommy Tuberville (AL) have called for sanctions for violations of religious freedoms in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is mostly Catholic and there is an ongoing, increasing crackdown on worship, shutting down churches and schools. They are trying to create a state-run church network, even requiring a fingerprint scan to attend church on Sunday. To make matters worse, they’re creating division between Catholics and Protestants, weaponizing churches against each other. This comes after repeated arrests of Catholic clergy. During Holy Week this year, they banned Catholic processions. The climate in Nicaragua amounts to persecution of Christians in this Socialist State. What can we do as the faithful? Jason Poblete, a prominent advocate for fundamental rights and religious freedom, replied, “We pray, we pray a lot.” “We need to bring attention to these issues, raise awareness, and work together to create an accountability network.” Poblete continues, “It will take more than sanctions.” Freedom to worship is a human right.
