property in socialist cuba, the first in a series

11/20/2024

This article is the first in a series we will publish on property rights in Cuba, aimed at demystifying the legal processes surrounding ownership, expropriation, and confiscation.

Written by a Cuban lawyer publishing under a pseudonym for security reasons, this series seeks to provide a clear and accessible understanding of how property rights in Cuba differ significantly from those in the United States.  In Cuba, property rights are shaped by a unique legal framework, heavily influenced by its socialist structure and historical events, such as the sweeping nationalizations of the 1960s.

This first installment focuses on the distinctions between expropriation, which involves compensation for public utility or social interest, and confiscation, a penalty tied to criminal acts. By examining these processes, the article sets the stage for a deeper exploration of Cuban property law and its practical implications, offering readers valuable insights into a system that operates under fundamentally different principles from those in the U.S.

America and Germany Must Act Decisively to Secure the Release of Their Hostages in Iran

Jimmy Sharmahd Facing Death Sentence in Iran, Needs Urgent Action
The #SaveSharmahd Campaign
On Monday, March 11th, 2024, the Islamic regime in Iran released a press article in their state controlled media and TV stating that Jamshid Sharmahd, together with the US government, were charged with alleged “terror plots” and fined 2.478 billion dollars to the regime as reparations and as a “penalty.” At the same time, the articles emphasize that Mr. Sharmahd, or Jimmy as we call him, has been sentenced to death and that his death sentence is upheld.

Once again, the regime is using lies and propaganda to extort concessions from Western powers, using innocent Western nationals and trying to silence critics of the regime and their families with fear of murder. Though, this is he first time that the Islamic regime is sentencing and fining an entire government extending their propaganda from dissidents onto the administration.

Cuba 2021: diagnosis and shock therapy

1/25/2022

Antonio Gonzalez Rodiles

Antonio Gonzalez Rodiles is a Cuban political activist and a member of "Estado de SATS", an independent project that promotes discussion on Cuban politics and persecution in Cuba.

The year 2021 on our Island will be sealed by the cruelty of Castroism, the rebelliousness of the people, and the abandonment they have faced. We Cubans, against all odds and fatalism, show that the spirit of freedom is still alive. July 11 left no doubt that the end of tyranny is our dream, no reforms to the socialist system or cohabitation with neo-Castroism. The protests took the regime by surprise and found the opposition at its lowest point in several decades. Many, during the demonstrations, believed that the nefarious tyranny would end. The regime promptly launched its elite troops with the order to raze. The popular catharsis crashed against that crude reality, denouncements and tokens of symbolic support were seen from abroad, although manipulative, demagogic and empty speeches also abounded.

Over 15 Catholic Priests, Religious in Cuba Write Open Letter to the People of Cuba: "To Live in Truth and Freedom reveals our real power as citizens"

1/24/2021

On the 23rd anniversary of Pope John Paul II's historic trip to Cuba, fifteen Catholic priests from throughout the island published a letter today to the people of Cuba. Stressing the dignity of the person, they stressed that the "fundamental option to live in truth and freedom reveals our real power as citizens." The letter with an English translation is embedded at the end of this post

"Governments exist for the people and by the people. Just as a common citizen has rights and duties, so does the State. It is time to overcome the fallacy that we should be grateful for what in reality are the State’s duties. Health, education, social welfare, civil peace, leisure and recreation, democracy and freedom of expression— among others, they are not gifts but rights, and the State exists to guarantee them," said the Catholic religious leaders, priests from several provinces.
