News Alert: Family of Loreto Hernandez Garcia, Vice President of Free Yorubas of Cuba, Gravely Concerned for His Wellbeing, Fears the Worst

8/25/2021

Earlier today, daughter of Loreto Hernandez Garcia, Vice President of the Free Yorubas of Cuba, demanded medical treatment for her father who remains in police custody in Santa Clara, Cuba. Mr. Hernandez’s brother, and former political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez (“Antúñez”) also called on international organizations to raise awareness and support for his brother’s case.

Loreto Hernandez Garcia has been held in police custody since July 15, and is in critical condition after suffering pre-infarction while in police custody earlier this month.
Mr. Hernandez suffers from several pre-existing medical conditions including high blood pressure, chronic asthma, chronic hypertension, diabetes, and other cardiac problems, and has previously reported to family members that his health has continued to deteriorate while in prison.

On July 19, Hernandez along with other members of the Free Yorubas were issued to remain in provisional prison as a precautionary measure until a trial is held. Mr. Hernandez was eventually transferred to La Pendiente Prison in Santa Clara on August 4.

Mr. Hernandez’s daughter Rosabell is immensely alarmed by her father’s arrest, and fears for his safety and wellbeing. Earlier this week, she received word her father was being denied medical treatment and being delivered meals late at night. She was also informed that witnesses in the prison saw a progressive deterioration of his health, most likely related to his untreated diabetes and arterial hypertension. In a message recorded for the Global Liberty Alliance (found below), she states this is not a political matter, but a medical one, and for that reason he should be treated for his conditions. She goes on to add that blame falls on the jailers of the prison for his mistreatment.

Mr. Hernandez’s brother and former political prisoner Jorge Luis Garcia Perez (“Antunez”) commented to GLA that refusal of medical attention is a common practice, used as a weapon of pressure and retaliation.

In his video testimony (found below), Antunez voices grave concern for his brother, and demands that any remains be released to his family should Mr. Hernandez succumb to his ailments and experience the worst.

Other members of the free Yorubas, including Loreto Hernandez’s wife, Free Yorubas President Donaida Perez Paseiro, and twin sisters Lisdiany and Lisdany Rodriguez Isak, are also being held in provisional prisons until a trial is conducted.
